John West Tuna Ad – No Drain?

IMAGE_157 (4)

Spotted this ad for John West Tuna near my flat at the weekend. I’m not sure what the bloke with the fiddle is all about but my eye was drawn to the USP – “No Drain Tuna”

Now they’ve obviously done some market research and found that some consumers are reluctant to buy their product because it’s too “fiddly”.

(I think I’ve just got the fiddle reference while writing that last sentence…………groan!)

But is our time so precious that we’re now looking to save a few seconds while opening a can of fish?

Maybe it’s because we’re too busy blogging and tweeting?

I’ll be “trawling” your comments for an answer soon I expect!

Bedford & Strand – London Restaurant Review

image

Having spent so much time over the last few years in the US where food and service tend to be very good, I’ve been getting more and more frustrated with restaurants in the UK which tend to either be too expensive, serve awful food or sufferer from shoddy and indifferent service.

When asked to go out for dinner or trying to arrange a date in London I’ve found it a bit of a lottery. Do we spend a load of cash to have a decent night out? Do we shrug and laugh at the less than attentive waiter or waitress? Do we just accept the food isn’t that fab because, well, that’s just the way it is?

Last night things changed as I was introduced to an oasis in this culinary desert we call our capital.

The Bedford & Strand bar and bistro near Charing Cross is simply delightful.

I turned up there with four mates from school. We get together every 3 months or so to catch up, chew the cud and find out what’s going on in each other’s lives.

We used to just hit a pub and sink several pints but now in our late thirties (did I just admit that?) we prefer a more refined evening of food and wine!

A small door way on Bedford Street hides some pristine stairs which take you down to a bar and restaurant buzzing with media types and folks drinking in the fantastic atmosphere and wine.

A mixture of French and British food, the menu is reasonably priced averaging around £14 for dishes like pork belly, fish cakes, steak tartar and sausage and mash.

The service was excellent, the manager – Kate – was chipper, funny and informative, not batting an eyelid when I simply said I didn’t like the cassoulet I’d ordered.

She just changed it!

The wine was very good and the extensive selection was nicely laid out on the menu by price bracket.

They also have a deli counter which is open all day serving excellent cheeses and meats.

Really it was excellent! It felt like we should have been in a rustic gaff somewhere in the French country side or a faux Euro-bistro somewhere in Manhattan, but we weren’t.

We were in central London, just shy of Covent Garden getting value for money!

As we left, actors from the theatre musical Joseph piled in for a post show beer and included a taller than you’d think Gareth Gates!

With all the wine we’d drunk it was a “long and winding road” home I can tell you!

Microsoft Advertising Video – Navigating Digital

When I’m out and about and people ask me what I do, I say I talk about Microsoft Advertising.

Having people understand we’re so much more than just “software & computers” and that we’re well placed at the cutting edge of digital marketing has been a challenge, but recent announcements like the Microsoft Media Network have shown people that, when it comes to advertising, we’re not just about MSN.

This new video says tells the brand story very nicely indeed!

Let me know what you think…..

Breast Feeding – Does Facebook Suck?

tit

Update: 1pm GMT – It appears there is another group on FB – Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!(Official petition to Facebook) – TechCrunch picked it up in 2007 so why-oh-why it’s hit the headlines again I don’t know!

Original post below:

BBC Radio Five Live’s Victoria Derbyshire has given quite a bit of airtime this morning to a new Facebook Group – Breast feeding is not a crime (Facebook bans breast feeding pictures)

Shoehorned in between coverage of the New Years Honours List and the bombings in Bilbao, the coverage has been greeted with mixed emotion by people berating Facebook for seemingly condemning what many see as a natural act, and those who can’t see what all the fuss is about.

Facebook has quite rightly banned photos of mothers breastfeeding where some or part of the nipple has been exposed because it violates their terms and conditions of service.

Those Ts & Cs are there for a reason and no one calling into Victoria’s show raised the issue of advertising!

It’s not that Facebook thinks that breast feeding is disgusting and somehow not worthy of parading on its pages, but it’s partly because advertisers don’t necessarily want their messages displayed next to images of nudity – what every form it might take.

Check out the group for some….erm……titillation….there are some weird and whacky comments, including one television company taking the opportunity to canvass for participants for a totally unrelated documentary.

One commenter from Australia says: “ITS YOUR FACE BOOK, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO PUT THE PHOTOS ON. THATS AS FAR AS IT GOES!!!!”

Actually it’s not just anyone’s Facebook and they have firm and decent reasons for policing images and making sure they keep within their guidelines.

Happy New Year! 🙂

P.S. At the time of writing the group had 1,156 members.

The Internet Is Better Than Sex!

A survey by Intel has indicated women in the US would rather abstain from sex for two weeks than lose their access to the web!image

In the “Internet Reliance in Today’s Economy” survey conducted by Harris Interactive:

· 65% of adults say they can’t exist without the net

· 71% say internet enabled devices like mobile phones, laptops and netbooks are important for immediate access to information

· 46% of woman but only 30% of men would give up sex for two weeks to keep their access

· Cable TV, dining out and gym membership all rank below the internet as “must haves” in this day and age

Like mobile phones, I can’t quite remember how we all managed without the internet, and I still can’t understand how people today can’t get into it or use it to the max.

But abstaining from sex!?!

Not sure Tim Berners-Lee knew he’d invented a form of birth control! 🙂

Sergey Brin’s Blog – Personal & Thoughtful Too

image Apparently the co-founder of Google Sergey Brin has launched a personal blog:

http://too.blogspot.com

Excellent if it is him as it’ll be very interesting to get some insight into the guy.

In his first entry he says: “”While Google is a play on googol, too is a play on the much smaller number – two. It also means “in addition”, as this blog reflects my life outside of work.“

Anticipating a huge reception by way of comments he’s introduced the caveat:

“While I would like to receive and post many insightful comments, realistically I am unlikely to be able to read through all of them and may accept very few or none at all. Thank you for your understanding.”

Talking about Parkinson’s disease in the 2nd entry, I did find the blue on black design a little heavy going on the senses……..but it may have been the claret so will revisit in the morning!
