Wikia Search Review – First Impressions

http://alpha.search.wikia.com/

OK so it’s only just launched, but the results are pretty bad. I’m struggling to understand the benefits to be honest. But as someone’s just commented at DaveN’s blog, Rome wasn’t built in a day. However I’m sure the Roman’s had better foundations!

I just tried to add an article but it crashed on me 🙁

From About Wikia Search:

“We are aware that the quality of the search results is low.” – No sh*t!

“…before we start, we have no user feedback data. So the results are pretty bad. But we expect them to improve rapidly in coming weeks, so please bookmark the site and return often.” – OK…..

They have picture results returned too – not sure who the guy on the right is!

Will revisit soon….

Bill Gates Interview With BBC dot.life

Not sure where the whole thing is!

But there’s an edited version here and a recap of the 15 minutes Rory Cellan-Jones had with Bill here.

 It’s all about Surface 😉

Fancy asking him if he had any Apple Macs in his house! I ask you……

Times Health Club – Cheaper Than The Gym

Made a new year’s resolution to get fit, lose weight and stay off the smokes?

Well join me in joining The Times Health Club for FREE!!!

You sign up, plug in a few details like your height, weight and target poundage, and then use the tools to track your progress.

They’ve added a Community aspect too with forums and groups etc, but the best thing is you can nominate motivators who’ll get weekly updates on your progress, so they can give you a good hiding over email if you’re slacking.

Check out my profile here – http://melcarson.timeshealth.co.uk

It all looks quite secure with some decent privacy settings – I wonder how long before a Facebook app gets written for it?

Bill Gates Interviewed Tomorrow By BBC’s dot.life

Darren Waters & Rory Cellan-Jones will interview Bill Gates tomorrow in Las Vegas.

The questions have been chosen from over 3000 posed by readers of the BBC’s dot.life Blog.

Darren gives an amusing account of the hoops one has to jump through in order to quiz my boss’s, boss’s, boss’s, boss’s, boss’s boss.

As you can see I ‘m pretty fussy about the number of cameras and camera angles too ! 🙂

The interview will be shown on News 24 on Sunday and online on Monday……

UK January “Sales” Search Terms Up 249%

A couple of weeks ago I talked about how many of us would be shopping on Christmas Day!

Well Netimperative reports Robin Goad from Hitwise saying that keyword volumes for “sale” and “sales” were up 200% and 249% respectively YOY for the week ending 29th December.

Kudos to those retailers savvy enough to have their campaigns set up and already bidding on those KWs, and respect to M&S, Currys, PC World and Argos, who started their sales at midnight Christmas Day and benefited from the great PR it gave them!

PS: John Lewis has just reported a fabulous start to the Sales too – 68% up on last year!

Context Matters – Microsoft Dance Video

Yesterday was the 1st installment of the Context Matters videos from Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions

That’s if you don’t guess before hand 🙂

999 Police Calls – Don’t Try These From Home!

Before Christmas, Cambridgeshire Police released an article on their website by way of a seasonal appeal.

999 emergency call centres (911 for those of you in the US) have always been abused by the ignorant & the stupid, but Chief Inspector Mike Winters decided to publish some of the more idiotic nuisance calls on the internet in the hope it will help get across that abuse of the service can cost lives:

“The message is; don’t put lives at risk by calling 999 when you do not need an emergency police response.”

Although the below are hilarious – just what were they thinking!!??
